Arise 1945-46

Dora Gordine, Arise, bronze, 1945-46

Dora Gordine, Arise, 1945-46, bronze, 66.6 x 18.5 x 15.4 cm. Cast by Morris Singer. The model, Elizabeth Goold-Adams, was the daughter of the late Sir Hamilton Goold-Adams, the former governor of Queensland, Australia, and his wife Lady Elsie Goold-Adams. The figure reflects Gordine’s admiration for Asiatic sculpture and her belief, expressed in ‘The Beauty of Indian Sculpture’ in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society in January 1941, that ‘pure sculpture, unlike painting, reached a degree of perfection in Asia which is hardly ever achieved in Europe, except for perhaps a certain period in Greece.’
