Arise 1945-46

Dora Gordine, Arise, bronze, 1945-46
Dora Gordine, Arise, 1945-46, bronze, 66.6 x 18.5 x 15.4 cm. Cast by Morris Singer.

This small standing female nude is informed by Gordine’s knowledge and experience of Indian, Khmer and Javanese sculpture, which she lectured on in the early 1940s at the Royal Asiatic Society and elsewhere, saying that ‘pure sculpture, unlike painting, reached a degree of perfection in Asia which is hardly ever achieved in Europe, except for perhaps a certain period in Greece’. The model was Elizabeth Goold-Adams, daughter of the society hostess Lady Elsie Goold-Adams and the late Sir Hamilton Goold-Adams, the former governor of Queensland, Australia.
