Sylphide is part of Gordine’s Spirit of the Ballet series. The pose may derive from a performance of the ballet La Sylphide, danced by the Ballets de Champs-Elysées company and choreographed by Roland Petit. Gordine saw a performance of the ballet at the Winter Garden Theatre in London in June 1947. Her bronze was exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in November 1949.
