Travelling Icon, late 17th to early 18th century
This small icon is an example of a travelling icon, dating from the late 17th century. The central panel depicts Christ attended by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, with the four evangelists and two other figures, probably Peter and Paul. John holds a scroll with the opening passage ‘Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world’.
